HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours

The Highway 62 Open Studio Art Tours will be my first open studio in the High-Desert!

We will be opening the studio for the first and third weekends of the event, October 8-9 & October 22-23, October 15-16 by appointment.

I will have an installation on view in collaboration with Željko Milovanović who will be performing live at 3pm each Saturday of weekend 1 & 3.

For all those that are unable to visit in person, you may also visit the studio online to view works available with free shipping: https://hi-desert-studio.company.site/

The Hwy 62 Art Tours is an annual multi-disciplinary desert-wide open studio art tour. Depending on the year, it is the largest Open Studio event in the state of California.

The concept of open studio art tours in itself is a fairly common thing: in our desert environment with questionable GPS, hand painted or missing road signs, and vast vistas to the edge of the earth the open studio art tour becomes an extraordinary thing. The artists here have chosen a world like no other, in which to create their own.

We are pleased to present ELEMENTAL, a solo exhibition featuring artworks by Tobias Tovera, whose practice delves into the realm of process in relation to natural phenomena. The paintings, sculpture, and sound investigate deep time creation and the primordial formations of living matter. The elemental power of nature is thematic and speaks to the metaphoric connection between the physical, metaphysical, and elemental realms, through which new forms are created. Each layer that is formed, and each element that is introduced, is part of an intuitive movement between the artist and the materials themselves: a performative ritual that embodies the meditative state.

This exhibition holds a lot of meaning for me as the painting and sculpture featured span the last ten years of my art practice, curated from the Permutation and Diffusion series.

I am honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with Željko Milovanović on a soundscape for the show. The soundscape is composed of crystal bowls, East Tibetan bowls, and captured sounds of wind and water, interwoven into a loop that may cause a hypnotic effect. 'Between Forms' will be on exhibit and streaming live.

Download and listen to 'Between Forms,' a soundscape by Željko Milovanović, to accompany ELEMENTAL:

High Desert Studio

Happy new year all! I am excited to announce I will be moving this month to Yucca Valley in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, where I will be building a studio.. a big vision come true!

Living and working in a desert landscape has been a dream of mine ever since I visited the Black Rock Desert in 2009 for Burning Man. It was there I experienced for the first time a landscape without trees and buildings, and the first time I saw the sun and the moon rise and set at the same time. I fell in love with the spaciousness of the desert and the energy vortex that runs through it. After many travels over the years from Iceland and Brazil to New York and New Mexico, I landed an art residency at the Yucca Valley Material Lab where I visited Joshua Tree National Park for the first time. It was there I felt a very special connection to the land, it is otherworldly, grounded and peaceful. It is a magical place full of beauty with endless skies and endless possibility. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to build a studio closer to nature on my favorite place on the planet.

To all my Northern California clients, I will be back around once per quarter to visit and pick up supplies with my cargo trailer. I will also be working with Cooke's Crating & Fine Art Transportation and participating in their art shuttle program from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area. You may also visit the studio online to view works available with free shipping:

My new location in Yucca Valley is conveniently situated on CA State Highway 62, intersected by State Highway 247 and easily accessible to all of Southern California. As the gateway to the Joshua Tree National Park and the economic hub of the Morongo basin, Yucca Valley is renowned for its stunning landscape, outdoor recreation, and will this year inaugurate the Yucca Valley Film Festival.

Alumini-Artists-in-Residence Exhibition

November 1 - November 30th, 2020

The Lucid Art Foundation Artist Residency Program is held in an idyllic forest setting in the hills of Inverness, California, bordering on the Point Reyes National Seashore. The artists are selected through a juried process or invited due to their affinity with the vision of the Foundation.

Since the residency usually allows for one person at a time, most of the artists have not met each other during their residency. Their experience of this semi-retreat in the wilderness bonds them through an invisible thread. Varied as their works are, they are in line with the mission of the Foundation, which promotes exploration of deep levels of consciousness in harmony with the natural world.

This residency alumni exhibition covers the entire program, from its inception in 2008 to 2019. We are presenting sixty-five alumni artists for this exhibition. Rather than presenting the work chronologically, we chose to arrange the works in a series of four exhibitions, one group per month, from October 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021. The works were selected according to the artists' concepts, materials, and forms.

Co-curated by Fariba Bogzaran and Peter de Swart

Artists-in-Residence Exhibition

May 4 - June 15th, 2020

Every year, the Lucid Art Foundation organizes a group exhibition for the artists-in-residence. This year, due to Covid-19, we are presenting the annual exhibition online. The Foundation hosted nine artists in 2019 from diverse genres. Each artist spent 1-3 weeks at the residency. The exhibition features one page for each artist's work along with their biography. If you are interested in aquiring any artwork in this exhibition, please contact lund@lucidart.org. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds directly support the artists. We would like to thank the artists for their participation in this year's exhibition.

I am honored to be part of last years LAF residency program and exhibit with such an amazing group of artists. The Lucid Art Foundation has launched the 2019 Residency exhibition online. The exhibit features a curated group of our works created during the residency. 'Inner Realm' is currently on view and available for purchase.

The Visual Alchemy of Tobias Tovera

A Viceroyal Short
Music by Philip Glass

The Visual Alchemy of Tobias Tovera is now streaming! The latest video is a review of my art practice highlighting all of my new work to date. BIG thank you to JP over at Viceroyal for an amazing collaboration. He has been incredible to work with. It has also been an honor to work with Philip Glass and his team on the track, 'Orbit,' for the music composition edited with the video. I am in awe and proud of our projects as it has been a year long journey to complete this project along with the Morphosis book.

Viceroyal presents The Visual Alchemy of Tobias Tovera, an exploration of Tobias Tovera's deep connection to nature, process, and art in his latest series.

"Metanoia means spiritual awakening and it is entirely possible that Tovera's visual alchemy will enable the viewer to have an epiphany or (at least) a bright moment in front of his work. It is also likely that this bright moment may be more than simply the sensory pleasure afforded by the colors, shapes, and textures of these series for the sensory delights here are inextricably connected to the pleasure of bringing meaning to them. In Tantra, the bliss that occurs when the senses are opened is linked to the bliss of understanding; bhoga (pleasure) and moksha (awakening) are related and this is not far removed from what is happening in Tovera's oeuvre."

NES

Ark Project | Artist in residency

August, 2019

I am thrilled to announce the Ark Project will be partnering with NES in Iceland this year. I will be in residency with this years recipient, Day Schildkret; California and New York based Earth Artist. I am honored to work with Day this summer in Skagaströnd, Iceland! While on residency I will be working on new work inspired by the visual alchemy of the Icelandic landscape and collaborating with Day on a site-specific installation.

NES is a process-oriented residency that strives to cultivate an environment where artists can craft their experience as they wish; whether that may be through conceptual development, research, or intervention and experimentation, artists have the utmost freedom while in residence at NES. The residency’s structure is therefore left open in order to cater to individuality and spontaneity. We work to provide a safe space where all art forms, intellectual and creative pursuits, methods of artistic investigation, and aesthetic inquiry are accepted, nurtured, and celebrated.

The Ark Project is an annual international artist residency program realized in 2015 with a focus on creation, presentation, and documentation of contemporary art that engages discovery, transformation and innovation. Each year the program travels to a new city across the globe and one artist is invited into the collective for an evolving curatorial project.

Altered States

June 26th - October 18th
Reception: Wednesday, June 26th, 2019 | 5:30pm to 8:00pm
Marin Community Foundation | M-F 9:00-5:00pm
5 Hamilton Landing, Suite 200, Novato, CA

I am excited to announce I will have 21 paintings on view for the Altered States exhibition opening this month! Altered States features original works from four Bay Area artists that explore the idea of subconscious creative practices manifested through the influence of the natural world.

Bedelgeuse, an alias of artist Travis Bedel, is an anatomical collage artist. His work includes cut paper collage, digital collage, and mixed media sculptural collage - all centered around human anatomy. Material is primarily sourced from vintage science and medical books that are available from the public domain. Bedel’s works include hand cut paper and digital collages that create a wild amalgamation of botanical, zoological, and anatomical imagery. These compositions produce synergistic imagery that represents humanity’s inherent relationship to nature and the universe.

David Choong Lee combines elements of graffiti, collage, graphic design, portraiture, and classical realism. His paintings and installations give birth to seemingly endless visual depth through the combination of abstract environments and colorful contrasts, which create the illusion of atmospheric landscapes.

Janey Fritsche believes there's something magical about where the land meets the sea; the melding of conscious and subconscious. It is also where shells, rocks, quartz crystals, and bio- matter become grains of sand from the flow of water. Illustrated in colorful detail, Fritsche places focus on pre-sand matter of rocks and crystals.

Tobias Tovera  is an American visual artist recognized for his work in painting and the sensory surrounds of his metamorphic sculptures. Using the concept of time as a foundation, Tovera’s studio practice explores energy systems, finding new dimensions in his materials as they metamorphose from one form to the next. The conception of his work was inspired by alchemy, medicine, and the primordial formations of living matter. From the chemistry of water reacting with minerals to a magic that reaches beyond science, Tovera’s work examines opposing elements such as nature and artifice, chaos and order, to reveal how they interact, transform, or propel each other.

Exhibition curated by Micah LeBrun

The exhibition will be held at the Foundation’s offices at 5 Hamilton Landing, Suite 200, Novato, CA and the public is welcome to attend between the hours of 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Lucid Art Foundation

Artist in residency

March, 2019

I am honored to be awarded the artist in residence this month at the Lucid Art Foundation in Inverness, California. I am very excited to be immersed in nature. Nature is an incredible source for inspiration and healing. I look forward to exploring a new flow of balance in my art practice and to take new projects further with materials that speak to the metaphysical in art + nature.

The Lucid Art Foundation was established in 1998 to support artists who explore the concepts of arts and consciousness. The Foundation was the recipient of the estate of Gordon Onslow Ford and operates the Gordon Onslow Ford Collection and Archive.

Reception: Thursday, December 6th, 2018 | 2:30pm to 6:00pm
Artist talk: 2:30pm to 3:00pm
Installation/performance: 3:00pm

Morphē  (‘form’ in Greek) - is an exhibition curated by Jason Adkins that explores visual manifestations realized through an artistic process that makes space for the natural phenomena of materials to transform, shift or renew.

Using salt, mineral, water, and fire, Tovera explores alchemical interactions in the pursuit of discovering a zone of possibility and immediacy. Inspired by the concept of primordial life, this series contemplates how life may have begun in Genesis. Each layer that is formed, each object introduced, is intuitive—a choreographed ritual that embodies the meditative state.

Experience Morphē, an immersive exhibition of contemporary painting and installation examining the interplay between the elements of fire, water, earth, and air. Tobias will be having an artist talk from 2:30pm-3:00pm followed by a performance installation accompanied by Jesse Stern.
